I am very lucky to have a dedicated space within my house to have a craft room. I do not do this as my job, but I felt that it was necessary as this is how I de-stress and reconnect with myself and my family. The room is in my basement and has a little natural light. When I designed the room, I knew I needed a lot of light and I wanted to keep the room cheery and bright. I chose a nice shade of blue and hung happy pictures of my family and artifacts from my travels.
The workspace
When designing the space, I started with IKEA because I felt that they had a lot of options that could be configured in many ways. I decided on an IKEA Gallant desk, Kallax 4x4 shelving unit, Alex drawers and a Raskog cart. The Gallant desk allows for enough space to work and keep some materials at hand. The Kallax shelves allow for great paper storage, books, photos and other items that I need to store a bit out of the way. The Alex drawer unit holds everything I need to get at immediately. The Raskog cart holds my Cuttlebug, embossing folders, dies and paper for card making. I recently discovered Stamp 'n Storage which is a company out of Minnesota. I appreciate their well crafted storage solutions for paper crafters. I started with their 12x12 paper holders for IKEA and added a few more products to keep items organized on my desk. I realized that since I only have limited time to craft, I needed all of my items accessible and I needed to clean up as I worked. I was their January 2017 Studio Showcase winner and you can see my craft room on their blog.
What I craft
My passion is really about solving problems. I think that creativity is an important feature of problem solving. I love to make things that have a use somewhere. I typically scrapbook and make cards. I like making cards because I can finish a card in a short time period. I like scrapbooking because it is a reminder of my journey throughout life and everything that is and was important to me. I like giving gifts that are handmade and are personalized. Overall, I just like crafting and feel very blessed to have a space that allows me to make things and share them with others.
